What to Do in the First 24 Hours After Water Damage in Your Eastern NC Home
The Clock Starts the Moment Water Enters Your Home
We've responded to hundreds of water damage calls across Beaufort County, Pitt County, and the surrounding Eastern NC area — and the one thing we tell every homeowner is this: the first 24 hours matter more than any other.
Within 24–48 hours, mold can begin to grow. Within 72 hours, it often becomes a much bigger and more expensive problem. So here's exactly what to do the moment you realize you have water damage.
Step 1: Stop the Water Source (If You Can)
If the water is coming from a burst pipe, leaking appliance, or fixture — shut off the main water supply to your home immediately. If it's storm or flood-related, focus on getting to safety first.
Step 2: Don't Wade Into Standing Water
Standing water can carry electrical current if any outlets, appliances, or wiring are submerged. Turn off electricity to affected areas at the breaker box, and don't step into standing water until you're certain it's safe.
Step 3: Call Your Insurance Company
Document everything with photos and video before touching or moving anything. Most homeowner's policies cover sudden water damage from burst pipes, appliance failures, and certain storm events. Call your insurance company to open a claim — then call us, and we'll work directly with your adjuster so you don't have to manage the back-and-forth.
Step 4: Remove What You Can Safely
If it's safe, move rugs, furniture, and valuables out of the wet area. The faster materials are moved away from moisture, the better the chance they can be salvaged.
Step 5: Get Professional Water Extraction Started ASAP
Consumer-grade fans and dehumidifiers aren't enough. Professional water extraction equipment removes moisture from walls, flooring, and subfloor materials that look dry but aren't. In the humid Eastern NC climate, this step is critical — the outside air doesn't help dry things out the way it would in a drier climate.
Why Eastern NC Is Different
Our coastal climate means that humidity is already high — especially in the summer. When water damage occurs here, drying conditions are worse than in most of the country. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers calibrated specifically to the conditions in our area.
We serve all of Beaufort County, Pitt County, Craven County, and the surrounding Eastern NC region. We're based right here in Washington, NC — not a call center in Charlotte.
